What happens in case of theft or loss of a Greek passport?

In case of loss or theft of a passport, the person concerned is obliged to report the fact immediately to the nearest Hellenic police or consular authority declaring the place, time and conditions of the loss or theft of his passport.

A passport that has been declared lost or stolen is invalidated upon submission of the relevant declaration.

In case of theft or loss of a Greek passport, a new passport is not granted before the completion of researches – that last up to three (3) months. In case of a new loss or theft within five (5) years from the previous statement, the researches last up to one (1) year.

What happens when a Greek passport is found?

A passport that has been declared lost or stolen is invalidated upon submission of the relevant declaration.

If the passport is found, it is handed over to the Office where the loss or theft had been declared, which after its cancellation (in accordance with paragraph 3 of Article 3 of Presidential Decree 25/2004), is returned to the beneficiary (except in case that it is confiscated in the course of criminal proceedings) and the Hellenic National Passport Center is immediately informed.

If a Greek passport is found for which no loss or theft statement has been submitted, it is immediately sent to the Hellenic National Passport Center.
