What are the procedures after submitting the supporting documents?

The process that follows the submission of supporting documents until the receipt of the new passport is the following:

  • An employee checks whether all required supporting documents have been submitted.
  • Supporting documents are transmited electronically to National Passport and Secure Documents Center.
  • National Passport and Secure Documents Center, will issue the passport, provided that the legal requirements are met, within 5 working days from the receipt of all necessary supporting documents.
  • The new passport will be dispatched, with express mail delivery, to the Passport Office where the application had been submitted.
  • The citizen receives the passport (from the Passport Office) in person or with written authorization, also presenting the proof of deposit.
  • If the request is rejected, the concerned person will be informed by the Passport Office by a personal letter. Administrative fees paid for passort issuance will also be returned.
Can I acquire a passport in one day?

Yes you can, but only for the following reasons:

  • Serious health reasons that impose hospitalization abroad (applies to the patient, his/her spouse, or relative up to the second degree, as well as the doctor or nurse who is going to accompany the patient abroad.
  • Death of a relative (up to second degree)..
  • Injury or emergency health reasons which is proofed with a health certificate from a foreign government hospital, or the disappearing of a relative up to second degree.
  • In case of property destruction by a natural disaster or other reasons beyond the applicant’s control .

In these specific cases, applications and supporting documents may also be submitted at the τhe competent Passport Office of the Police Directorate of the headquarters of National Passport and Secure Document Center. Currently the Passport Office located at the Pagkrati police station.

Can I have two passports that are valid?

No, it is not allowed to possess two Ordinary Greek Passports that are valid.

What happens to a passport, in case of a decision of prohibition from leaving the country?

Your passport is removed by the competent police and consular authorities and sent for safekeeping to National Passport and Secure Document Center.

In the event that the holder does not return his/her passport within thirty (30) days, it will be cancelled by National Passport and Secure Document Center

The passport is returned to its holder, or (in case it had been canceled) the citized may issue a new passport after the cancellation of the prohibition.

I have submitted an application for passport renewal and I want to travel using my current passport.
Would Ι encounter any problems?

No. As long as your current passport is valid, it can be used until the new one is received.

It is possible to submit supporting documents by showing only the digital ID card in the Gov.gr Wallet application?

As specified in article 80 of Law 4954/2022, the presentation of the digital identity card in the Gov.gr Wallet application is equivalent to the presentation of the corresponding physical identification document.

Do I need to submit a photocopy of my ID card as supporting document?

To submit a passport application, it is necessary to show the applicant's active Identity Card or the corresponding digital ID in the Gov.gr Wallet application. In the case of armed forces or security forces personnel who submits a request for a passport using a special/service identity card, a photocopy of it must be submitted. From 03-08-2026, the presentation of an identity card that does not comply with Regulation (EU) 2019/1157 will not be accepted for passport issuance.
